About Dr. Keenum

Dr. Keenum is an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon practicing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the world renowned practice, Vance Thompson Vision. He was trained through the elite and rigorous ASOPRS program in Dallas, TX. Each year fewer than 30 applicants from the US and around the world are accepted to participate in one of the few prestigious ASOPRS fellowships. The goal of the fellowship is to train surgeons in plastic surgery around the eye. Dr. Keenum focuses only on cosmetic plastic and reconstructive surgery around the eye allowing him to focus all of his efforts in providing world class care in a very specific type of surgery.

Dr. Keenum completed medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. This was followed by an intern year at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center. He then went on to complete a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, TX. He then stayed on to train under Dr. Ronald Mancini as the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellow at UT Southwestern for two years. Here he gained mastery in the art of eyelid surgery including reconstructive surgery and cosmetic eyelid surgery. He then joined the world renowned anterior segment practice, Vance Thompson Vision, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to work as one of the few ASOPRS trained ophthalmic plastic surgeon in the entire state.

Dr. Zac Keenum currently focuses solely on eyelid surgery with a special interest in cosmetic and rejuvenating eyelid surgery. He offers services including custom upper and lower blepharoplasty. Dr. Keenum also offers functional eyelid surgery including upper blepharoplasty, ptosis repair surgery, ectropion repair surgery, entropion repair surgery, eyelid retraction surgery, droopy eyelid surgery, and even endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy for tearing and nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

Dr. Keenum has special interest in surgical instrument design. While a fellow at UT Southwestern, Dr. Keenum developed a surgical instrument that is now used to facilitate a novel ptosis surgery. This surgical technique and the instruments method of use was published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology in 2023. Dr. Keenum enjoys not only instrument design but also clinical research to help advance the field of ophthalmic plastics. He has been author and co-author on a number of peer reviewed journal articles.

Finally, Dr. Keenum has allowed his passion for education to marry with his medical career. Dr. Keenum was awarded the Fellows Teaching Award in 2022 while in training. He has taken this passion further by creating the educational content called: Dr. Eyeball MD on YouTube and Instagram.
